Sample Exam Question 1

The extract from the show Agent Carter depicts the story of an ex-women soldier who isn't being treated well in her new office job after the war. The introduction the the series starts out with an establishing shot of New York city some years after the war has ended. The somewhat quite establishing shot is then interrupted by a blaring red alarm light and sound to give the audience a shock and understanding that the new job Agent Carter has been given is still a dangerous one and should be handled with caution. The first shot of Agent Carter that the audience receives, is a shot of her wearing a deep blue uniform which is a demonstration of Mise-En-Scene. The deep blue color represents her emotion of sadness as she still morns the death of her lover who passed during the war and it shows how Agent Carter feels now with a new position inside an office building. Lots of mid-shots and Close ups are utilized in these scenes to allow the audience to read her body language and understand that she is aggravated by how the men in her work space treat her unfairly and don't take her experience and skills seriously . Not only does the mid-shots help out Agent Carters emotion of aggravation, but it does show the emotions of her co-workers and most importantly her boss, the emotions of the men inside the office are overconfident and cocky because during the time period women were still treated as people who stay at home and take care of the children. The mid-shots of Agent Carter's boss also give him a stance of authority and confidence which is something the audience would recognize immediately a soon as he walks into the frame.

An over the shoulder shot soon appears and it's shot behind Agent Carter. This scene is meant to envoke the idea that since Agent Carter is a woman, that all men including those who aren't her boss can and will tell her what to do as her job. These few scenes show a great example of how any work life for a women was during post world war 1. During the time many women with great skills and passion weren't treated with the same respect as the regular working man, and the show agent Carter perfectly captures how women felt about not being treated equally to the men working in the same field as themselves. Low-key lighting is utilized to envoke the feeling of mystery as the alarm goes off once again, but only with agent Carter in the office all alone. The effect of the Low-Key lighting continues as Agent Carter travels to the coordinates that were given to her, only this time mystery and fear are present as emotions the audience could feel. This is supported by the fact that Agent Carter is traveling all alone by herself in a dark part of the city with a barely lit up building in the distance. The dark atmosphere to understand that at night crime is always active in New York especially when a lady is by herself and thugs are near.
