Editing and Transitioning

The movie Pixels is a movie full of editing and transitioning every few so seconds, especially during the opening three minutes of the film. Down below I will list and describe the best example of each edit and transition found in this film

0:21 Short take- This moment in the film is very short ( A blink of an eye and you'll miss it moment) but it does add lots of detail to the story of the film. The first detail being that the teen is riding his bike super fast and performing a trick, this little detail drives the narrative that the kid is in a rush to tell his friend that the arcade has finally opened and is excited to go explore it. The speed is further elaborated with the slight motion blur that takes place during the short take.

0:34 Instert

- This insert give the audience a focused shot of the jar of quarters, the reasoning behind it is because the jar of quarters moves the plot forwards since they need quarters to play at the arcade that recently opened up in their town. The audience is encouraged to feel a sense of humor since the older brother surprisingly took the quarters from his sister for him and his best friend, the audience also understands at what point in time the storyline is taking place in the beginning of the film due to the boys talking about the opening of an arcade, and the need for them to have lots of quarters to be able to play the arcade machines.

0:35 Action mat

ch- This action match is short but very valuable to the narrative on the story, the child taking the jar of quarters so quickly and efficient while on the bike means that the kid is very much in a rush to explore the recently opened arcade. The audience could gain a feeling of amazement due to how skillfully the boy grabbed a jar of quarters while riding a bike.

0:38 L cut- The L cut in this short moment occurs when the brother's young sister yells for her mom after she had her hard earned taken by her other brother. The L cut could give the audience an idea on how angry the little sister was in that moment and how loud she was yelling for her mother to come and resolve a problem her brother caused.

0:45 Jump Cut- In this scene, the jump cut is utilized to show how much the two boys had to travel across their town in order to reach their destination. The jump cut further develops the plot by not including unnecessary moments that the boys had riding their bikes to the arcade, thus allowing the writers to speed up the story that is currently being told in the beginning of the movie.

1:16 Eye match- The eye match demonstrated in this scene shows the main character of the story hyper focused on the screen of the arcade machine. This scene allows the audience to understand that the main character has a gift of seeing different patterns of the obstacles inside of the arcade games. The audience is given further information on the main characters gift later on in the scene when the teens eyes are glowing with the bright colors of the arcade machines.

1:18 Long take- The long takes are used in this movie to show the audience more information on the different colors and designs of the games contained in the arcade machines. To the audience, this long takes allows them to understand the familiar games that were around at the time on when the story takes place, and to allow the audience to feel nostalgia towards these games that they played long ago. It also displays a form of importance since the whole story of the movie revolves around the arcade games shown coming to life.

1:48 J cut- The J cut is a short on yes but it does bring life to the two characters in this scene because the short boy who is unexperienced in playing arcade games is very impressed by his best friend's skill when it comes to reading thee patterns of these games. This also puts the audience in the short kids shoes by being impressed because of the other boys' impressive and jaw dropping skills. The little scene also shows the two kids friendship as both of them agree with each other on how the main character is so good at the arcade games.

1:50 Shot Shot- This shot shot is connected to the J cut but as previously said it demonstrates to the audience that the both boys have such a strong friendship that they both agree on how he is so good at playing the multiple arcade games even though its their very first time in that location.

2:10 and onwards Straight Shot- The remainder of the opening film shows how "expressive" the main character's gift of being able to analyze different patterns of different games really is. The multiple straight cuts of him playing the different games with the same look on his face allows the audience to be focused just like him, but with a twist, it makes the audience focus on how skillful he is at the arcade. This gift of him playing and understanding the multiple patterns of these games will also drive the plot of the story later on when the games come to life, henceforth these straight cuts act sorta like a foreshadowing to the plot of the story.
